Spending two weeks in Granada and planning day trip (possible overnight) by car. Thinking either Ubeda and Baeza, Alpujarra towns of Lanjarón and Trevelez or the coast at Nerja and Salobrena. We enjoy history and scenery - not looking for beach resort and want to avoid big tourist towns like Malaga. Any suggestions?
If you are not looking for a beach resort, then avoid Nerja and Salobreña.
There's more history in Úbeda and Baeza, whereas the Alpujarra is more about landscape and small villages. They're quite different...difficult to help you choose!
There are probably busses that go to each Salobreña and Lanjarón. Neither is very large. Lanjarjón has a castle ruin with a nice view and the main road through town was interesting. Salobreña has a very wide beach and it too has a castle. It’s only an hour’s drive from Granada. I can’t say if either is worth spending a night. When we visited in 2014, we had a rental car and did both in the same day, then traveled east and spent the night in Almería. Almería has a nice Alcazaba, market, and El Cable Inglés. On your return to Granada you could head north from Almería and drive through Tabernas Desert (Desierto de Tabernas) nature preserve and maybe stop at Calahorra Castle in La Calahorra. En route to Almería from Salobreña you need to pass nearby the Acueducto Carcauz at Av. Sierra de Gádor, 04738 La Gangosa. I haven’t been to it, but it looks interesting.
