Dali Museum

I am planning a trip to Figueres to see Dali Museum while in Barcelona in August, with my 13 and 14 years old daughters. I am reading reviews and some people seem to think it would not be appropriate for kids/teens. I was wondering if someone has visited this museum with kids... is it really a bad idea? I would appreciate an opinion... thanks

I don't remember anything that would suggest that. When I visited, there were several high school groups there. If your girls like jewelry, do not skip the Dali jewel collection in the building next door - it's included in the Theatre-Museum ticket.

We were there off season, and only a handful of visitors were there, none as young as 13 at the time, but I can’t imagine anyone thinking the place would be inappropriate for a 13 or 14 year old. I wonder if the reviewers had kids who were just not interested, or were distracted, or were just not happy being with their parent(s) for some reason. If you’re taking them to Spain, and have interest in Salvador Dali, my guess is your daughters don’t fit that narrow profile, and you all will find the visit worthwhile. Buen viaje!

I think there's some explicit art--maybe drawings? But the thing is, the kids either won't realize what they're seeing (in which case, no problem) or it will be something they've seen before (in which case, this childless person would again say "no problem"). I am not a Dali fan at all, but I still enjoyed the place, and it's quirky enough to--probably--hold the interest of children not really interested in art.

The jewel collection is, indeed, fabulous. You need to pre-purchase a timed ticket for the museum. I was told you can visit the jewel collection at any time that day, including before your museum entry time. Do allow enough time for the jewels; photos will probably be taken.

I was in Figueres on a rainy day in May and had a ticket for the first time slot. There were multiple tour groups in the museum within 10 minutes, mainly on the two lower floors. I went upstairs early and returned later to see the second floor when it was less crowded.

Figueres has a small historic area near the museum but is not, in my view, one of Carltalunya's most attractive towns. If you take a fast train from Barcelona you'll end up at Figueres-Vilafant Station, which is about a 20-minute walk from the museum, I think. There's a city bus that runs from the station to a stop near the museum. It's timed to fit the train schedule. If your train is late, the bus will probably have departed by the time you walk out of the station. Have a map on your smartphone so you can navigate on foot if you need to.

If you need food outside the (very late) standard meal times in Catalunya, there's a casual place open through the day that's not too far from the bus stop; you'd probably walk right past it if you walked from the train station to the museum. I remember that the name reminded me of an American hotel or movie theatre--maybe Astoria?

You're visiting Europe, in general terms, we have a much different approach on those subjects, also us here in Catalonia. While I respect whatever views you might have you should be aware we consider nudity a natural thing, and you will find plenty on our beaches and in our art museums... and without "warnings" -precisely because of that :))

My granddaughters went to the Dali Museum as young teens, no issues.

Dali seemed to have a thing for breasts and they show up in many of his works. I don’t see that as being a reason for not going.

Dali was certainly a repulsive person. Orwell was right about him. Dali was a friend of fascism, a wife-beater and a sadistic and opportunistic fraud.

But as Orwell also noted, that doesn't mean his "art" was wicked. I don't recall anything at the Figures museum that would shock your daughters. More likely, they'll laugh at some of it and be surprised that grownups take it seriously.

I, too, am no fan of Dali’s art; but I found the museum to be very interesting. There were many, many children there when we visited. No one seemed to be shocked. My own recollection is that there was little that could be deemed pornographic. Some of the works would be quite intriguing to children, like the optical illusion pieces.
