Cultural sensitivity in Seville

My family is currently planning a trip to Seville, Spain. We are considered African American or Black. I would like to know if this will be a safe environment for us. What do the people of Seville think of people with dark skin and how do they treat them?

This is such a good question.
I think you are likely to encounter more prejudice if you are mistaken for an African, North African or sub-Saharan, rather than an American. The reason is due to illegal entry and illegal work in Spain by some members of these groups and the terrorist problems.
Please come back and tell us your experience.

I don't think you will have any problems.. I found Seville to be a rather easygoing multicultural place.

But I would agree, I noticed a little irritation by the locals with some african immigrants (I presume they were) who are often selling things and a bit aggressive in tourist areas. I've noticed this in Athens and Italy as well. I don't think it is so much the color of their skin, but it is just typical when there is an influx of the poor from other countries, and it seems that usually what you see in the tourist area are young men hawking things aggressively...

But in general my guess as a tourist you won't be mistaken, and I think the worst thing you risk is just some random idiot being rude and not any real physical safety issues. I doubt you have any real safety concerns or more than any other tourists.

Hope you have a nice trip..

The irritation is not with the colour of the skin, it's with the fact they are illegally and dishonestly selling stuff -sometimes as you mention, a bit aggressively- and giving a bad image to the city while the shop keepers around are being crucified with taxes. Sometimes, like in Barcelona, they literally fight the police when they're being arrested for illegally selling goods without a license, most of which are fakes by the way.

Please don't try to pinch this to a racial issue... that's a problem you guys have in the US but we don't have here.
