Costa Brava tour question

Hello,

I will traveling solo to Girona for a couple of days this week. I had tired to arrange a local Girona tour and a longer, Jewish history-themed tour of Girona and Besalau through Girona Experiences, but they have a limited schedule that week. They offered instead the following "Costa Brava and Romanesque Villages" ( http://www.gironaexperience.com/en/girona-experience-tours/costa-brava-and-romanesque-villages ) and I was wondering if anybody could fill me in on this area (or, even better, the tour if you know anything about it). I enjoy beautiful scenery as much as anybody, but I am definitely inclined to more history/culture-oriented tours, and the description is a little vague in that regard. I just wonder if this is worth this hundred euros (for me, I don't doubt it's a lovely tour) or if I should look for something else.

Thanks!
Caroline

It's a beautiful city and area which I really enjoyed just bouncing around on our own. The tour wouldn't be worth it to me. Maybe contact the tourist bureau for advice?

We spent four days in Begur on the Costa Brava, beautiful, waterfront hotel.. But it sounds like you weren't planning to tour the Costa Brava so agree maybe you should spend the time in Girona on your own.

Difficult to say... I personally never liked those sort of tours. If you check the schedule is arriving here, quick tour, then bus again to next destination, brief visit there, and so on. Not my cup of tea. I'm a very DIY sort of traveller, I like to set my own pace. Yet unless you were to hire a car, it's difficult to set a proper visit to more than say two towns in a day since public transportation -while very good- is not always as frequent as you might need.

If you're staying for two days, here are some suggestions for easy history-related DIY from Girona: Besalú, Figueres, Cadaqués, Monastir de Sant Pere de Rodes, Empúries... and more generically: Costa Brava

And check out the vast number of possibilities in Girona itself: http://www.girona.cat/turisme/eng/monuments.php

Wow, I think Enric just offered a personal view. lol

It does seem a lot of money for just one day. If you have the luxury of a few days then I would look at public transport options to Llafranc, Figueres, Cadaques, Besalu. It really is a beautiful corner of Catalunya, which in itself is a beautiful part of the world.

Caroline, I was traveling solo in Catalunya myself just in April, spending nine nights total in Barcelona, and wanted to do some of these same visits. One day I went by fast train to Figueres and visited the Dali Museum, then went by normal train to Girona in the early afternoon, poking around into the evening before returning to Barcelona by train. I covered a lot of ground in Girona, all on foot, but it was a long way walking from the RR station all the way to and through the old city to the ancient city walls well above the Cathedral, then walking back. Doing that again, I think I would go one or both ways by taxi or local bus in Girona. Another day I took an excellent small group day tour called "medieval villages" with Explore Catalunya tours. We went from Barcelona to Besalu, Rupit and Tavertet, with an excellent group lunch in Rupit (we each ordered and paid our own). The guide (Josep) was Catalan, partly raised in that rural area, and he was wonderful, really made the day. Yes, you spend limited time in each small town, and considerable time in the small bus, some of which time is very scenic, but not the parts getting into and out of Barcelona. I really enjoyed the day, very different from Barcelona. By the way, both Besalu and Rupit are featured in the book "The Most Beautiful Villages of Spain" which sits beside my easy chair right this minute.

Thank you, everybody! I think I am going to pass on the tour, unless the one I really wanted suddenly turns up enough people. I did email the tourist board, and found out about a regular, two-hour, walking tour, offered daily. Perfect.
