Costa Brava- Girona or coastal stay for 2 nights?

Hello fellow travellers!
I will be heading to Barcelona with my teen boys and have 2 nights to spend in Costa Brava. I could see them liking a Via Ferrata and a kayaking excursion. Should I stay in Girona for the 2 nights or a coastal town? I see Tossa del Mar is recommended a lot. I will not be renting a car.
