Costa Brava diving

Hello- Are there any good places in Costa Brava to scuba dive? I will be spending time in Barcelona as my base. Will a car be necessary or is public transportation available? Also, how soon before travel my dates will the Sagrada Familia start posting advance ticket purchases? Thank you all. - George

Yes there are plenty yet note you'll have to go to the northern tip of Catalonia (the northern part of Costa Brava) for better diving experiences as the rest of the coast is quite sandy -not much for great dives.

One of the best spots for diving is around Illes Medes in l'Estartit, but since it's a marine reserve you can only do it thru authorised companies (not on your own, you'd be fined heavily!) and it's best to pre-book in advance. Another nice spots -with less restrictions- would be Palamós. But best check the regional tourism board for more options as aside diving there are plenty other stuff in offer in the area: skydiving, kitesurfing...

To most towns you could do it in a day escapade from Barcelona and by public transportation, but it's cutting it quite thin... if you can stay overnight it's much more relaxed (and in some cases it's the only way).

For info, train goes up by the coast as far as Blanes, then the rougher part of Costa Brava (which is Catalan for Rough Coast) kicks in and the train turns inland so to go to the coastal towns in the upper Costa Brava you'll have either to take buses straight from Barcelona or (faster) take a high speed train to say Girona or Figueres and then local buses to the towns.

As per advanced tickets for Sagrada Família, that'll depend on the month you're coming, but three/four days should suffice.

Enjoy!
