Costa Brava car trip

Hello there

I and my family (mom, dad and my sister) are planning a trip to Costa Brava, Spain in early October 2015. We were thinking about renting a car and driving along the coast from Barcelona up to the French border, and back via Girona.

I heard that there are a lot of car rental services so we are lost and don't know which one to pick. Has anyone rented a car in this area, please advise which company is good?

When we drive along the coast, we prefer to stay in smaller towns as we are fond of nature and quiet destinations. For example we have selected such places as Roses, L'Escala and Blanes. But it's not yet decided, so we're open to suggestions of quiet places with beautiful nature and views (my dad's a landscape photographer).

We'd also like to scuba dive one or two times (I and my family have no prior scuba diving experience, but I am visiting Croatia in September with my friends and I expect to dive there). I figure that the water and air temperature in early October are still fine to sunbathe and dive?

Thank you all in advance for your suggestions and replies.

From a consumer point of view I would always choose one of the majors whilst in Europe - Avis, Hertz, Europcar.
They offer the best protection should something go wrong.

I rent cars frequently in Europe. Simply go to Priceline and check out the rates. I will typically stay with one of the larger companies as well, but I will go with the cheapest rate. You do not have to prepay, so just make a reservation for the best price, then check back every once in a while and see if those rates have changed. If there is another one that is lower, cancel the first one and make a new reservation. I would never prepay as the rates can change daily. I almost always get a much cheaper rate than the one I start out with, but just in case the rates should go up at least I have a car reserved. Right now there are rental rates as low as $82 per week in October....
