Next month we will take a two day trip from Barcelona to Figueres and then over to the coast and back to Barcelona. Any thoughts on staying the night in either Figueres, Fortia or Empuriabana? We are looking for a quaint town - hopefully with something to do in the evening (we will be jet lagged so nothing much). Thank you!
Figueres and Empuriabrava(?) are not very quaint in my opinion, just workaday. Never heard of Fortià. The closest "quaint" seaside town is Cadaqués. You could also try Besalú, but that's more inland.
FYI, if you are in the Emporda region for a few days, I can suggest visiting Empúries, the site of the ancient ruins of a Greek colony from the 6th–3rd century BC. It's quite unique as the ruins sit right on the Costa Brava overlooking the sea. The area is also the site of an ancient Roman town called Emporiæ from the 2nd century BC - 6th century AD. There is a pretty good museum on-site containing artifacts and mosaics of the Roman and Greek periods called the Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya - Empúries.
