Cordoba to Toledo by train/bus

My current IT does not include Toledo and heard it's worth the trip. The problem is how to fit Toledo to my itinerary without crisscrossing regions and waste time-that I don't have. Please help.

Here's my current itinerary.

From Cordoba to Madrid then to Barcelona. If I add Toledo, is it best to hit Toledo first from Cordoba. then Madrid then Barcelona? It appears that if I keep my current IT, then hit Toledo from Madrid, I would have to double back to Madrid to go to Barcelona.

Train service to Toledo goes through Madrid in most cases. There is not a direct train from Cordoba to Toledo - you change in Madrid, but the travel time is something like 3 hours. There may be a direct bus (I have no idea if there is, but it's possible), but it will take well over 3 hours, because the train is high speed and the bus is obviously going normal highway speeds at max, and making stops.

The Madrid - Toledo train is under an hour.

So what I'd do is: after Cordoba, take the AVE train to Toledo (with a switch in Madrid). Then after Toledo, take the train to Madrid, then on to Barcelona.

To make it easier, you can check your luggage at the Madrid train station and just take an overnight bag to Toledo. You could also just stay in Madrid and day-trip to Toledo.

If you are not interested in spending the night at Toledo you can do it as a day trip from Madrid. Buses run hourly and it takes about an hour to get there. Go early and come back late just make sure you buy your return ticket before you leave Madrid to make sure you can get back.
