Cordoba day trip on way to Madrid from Sevilla

I'm thinking of doing Cordoba as stop (day trip) after we leave Sevilla by train on our way to Madrid.
How much time should we plan for Cordova as a day trip going onto Madrid? Four, five, six hours? More?

I know there is the AVE train from Sevilla to Cordoba and then on to Madrid but that is the most expensive one. There is Avanti (I think? sp? ) What's the best option? Do you book the legs of the trip separately?

I plan to book this train in advance as I know it is a popular route. We would be there in September/October 2017.

What is the best way to do this if I'm trying to book in advance?

Suzanne,

If you'd like to visit Córdoba en-route to Madrid, you will need to buy separate train tickets; Sevilla to Córdoba, and Córdoba to Madrid ( Puerta de Atocha station).

Since you'll have luggage when you arrive to Córdoba, you may store it at the bus station across the street from the train station.

You can book your train tickets on Renfe.com and choose from the various trains that travel the routes you need. The AVE, AVANT and ALVIA trains are all high speed trains so you may choose the one with the best price.

How much time to spend in Córdoba? That's a very personal decision and it depends on what you want to see and do there besides visiting the famous Mezquita.
Make sure to check the timetables of the Mezquita, especially on Sundays & holidays when it's closed for a few hours for religious services.

Keep in mind that it may take time to retrieve your luggage at the bus station upon your departure.
I don't have personal experience with this since we stayed in Córdoba for a few days.

Enjoy your time in Spain!

Thank you Priscilla! All good things to consider....we will be doing Sevilla and Cordoba mid-week so the Mezquita should be open regular hours. Still fine-tuning....:)

We did it in reverse. Mid morning from Madrid, spent the afternoon and evening in Cordoba and had a hotel about one block from the Mezquita. So it was convenient to visit a couple of times. There are a couple of other sites - Roman baths, some gardens - that are worth some time. We do some other things in the AM and then caught a train on to Seville. For us it was a leisurely way to see a bit of Cordoba. The Mezaquita is pretty in the evening.
