Connection time at MAD

I am in the final stages of laying out my itinerary for a 2 week trip to Spain in October. My plan is to end the trip at Granada and fly from Granada to Madrid for the return flight home. There is a flight from Granada to MAD that arrives at 1:45 pm. My flight back to Chicago has a departure time of 4:40. Is this enough time to make that connection?

As an alternate, there is an earlier flight from Granada to MAD but it arrives at 10:30, giving us 6 hours to sit around the airport waiting.

That is a very, very easy connection.

I just flew home from Madrid; I had a 65 minute connection and I made it, with enough time to have two platers of food in the lounge.

I think that's plenty of time. When I've connected through MAD-Barajas in the morning, it's always been a breeze in terms of lines at security. I connected in Barajas last year and there were literally zero people in the security line I had to go through.

Barajas is a very large airport, so it's entirely possible that it will take you 25 minutes to walk from say Terminal 1 to Terminal 4S. If you're flying American Airlines home, I think those are all 4S which is a long walk. So, that's a consideration when it comes to connections. If you were severely, severely delayed getting to Madrid, you might be in a situation where you're rushing through an airport for a very long time.

Obviously, you have to make the financial/time calculation. if you're on separate tickets and you miss your flight because of a massive delay, that's could be bad. But, you would have plenty of time to handle a 90 minute delay.
