Connecting times in Madrid airport

Hello! We arrive in Madrid after connecting via FRA from Vancouver Canada. Q1. Do we go thru EU passport control in FRA? Q2. We wonder how quickly we can get from MAD to Atocha to catch an AVE train. Is 1.5 hr too tight or take the train 2.5h after arriving MAD? Maybe partly depends on Q1…. Thanks for any advice/experiences!

You should go through immigration in Frankfurt as it’s your first stop in the Schengen zone. Catching the Ave within 1.5 hours of landing is a separate issue and probably doubtful or cutting it very close. Assuming your flight arrives on time, you still need to deplane, get to baggage claim, and wait for your luggage to come out. Then you need to get to Atocha and go through its security and lines. I’d allow more time if possible.

The Renfe Circanias commuter train goes from T4 to Atocha, and it’s probably your best bet. But the trains run every 15 mins and it’s a 30 minute ride. Less than 3€, but free if your have an AVE ticket booked.

I’d say doable if you’re carry on only. If you check bags, just book the later train and relax.
