Combo Ticket Options to Montserrat for Group of 8

At the end of March 2017, my husband and I plus 6 friends will be touring Barcelona, Toledo and Madrid with a RS tour.
Prior to joining the tour, we are planning a day trip to Montserrat from Barcelona. Would love feedback on which ticket combo option to go with....Trans Montserrat at 29.30 euros or the 46.20 euros Tot Montserrat ticket.
With a group of 8, we plan to use the rack train opposed to the cable car which may have limited space.
Regarding the train ride from Barcelona's Placa d'Espanya....can first class tickets be purchased as part of the combo-ticket option? Again, with our group we would prefer to have reserved seats for the train.
Please share your feedback on the combo-tickets and all other Montserrat must-see points.
Thank you, Tess

  • TransMontserrat includes tickets for transportation only. TotMontserrat includes a voucher for a meal in one of the restaurants -I personally advise against it... it's better you choose once you're there.

  • Cable car carries 35 people on each journey

  • No first class on commuting trains or seat reservation for that matter. Commuting trains from FGC -the public company run by the Government of Catalonia- are very punctual, modern and comfortable (contrary to the commuting trains from Renfe, the Spanish company, run under the brand Rodalies) Check this video so you have an idea about the sort of train from BCN to Montserrat by FGC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWZTF6Zr1ew --thank the Japanese passion for trains for this video, LOL! :)))

I would give you one tip. When leaving I would take the cable car down to the train station and take the train up to the Montserrat final stop. As those folks exit grab a seat for the down trip. At the end of the day the trains are pack with standing room only back to Barcelona.

We did the combo with the meal and didn't think it was worth it. There are other dining options that we felt would have been a better option. Also, if you are interested in the choir concert, they only perform for 10 minutes, so get there early.

Also, as Enric said, there are no reserved seats on the train, we were glad we were early for that as well. It's more like a subway train. By the time the train departed it was pretty full. The good part of that is it's pretty easy to figure out where to go after you get off the train, because you have a group to follow.
