Coast South of Malaga

We are looking for small coastal town for 2 weeks in Oct 2027. We love Malaga, but want to try a new place south of Malaga. We want to avoid the big resorts that are common between Malaga and Gibraltar.

How far from Malaga is okay? Perhaps farther than you wanted, but two weeks is plenty so just sharing that the coastal area near Vejer de la Frontera is really lovely.

The only thing south of Málaga is water.

A popular town east of Málaga is Nerja as is frequently mentioned. Two weeks seems like a long time there. Also consider that many of the lesser touristed towns essentially shutter after the tourist season so there will be fewer shops and restaurants open.

Further east is Motril. It has a nice beach to walk along, but few restaurants along it. The town itself has no wow sites and can be seen in a few hours.

Even further east is Almería. It has a nice market and Alcazaba, but again, two weeks is a long time and it isn’t a small town. The Cabo de Gata beaches are nearby.

If you have a rental car there are a number of places you could visit from Nerja or Motril.

You might consider Tarifa, located at the southernmost point in continental Europe. We enjoyed a brief stay there and wish that we could have lingered longer. The old town is lovely, local cultural life is evident, the view across to Africa is amazing and fresh seafood is abundant. We did not have time for the beaches but there are eight or so nearby. Conversely, we found Nerja to be essentially an ex-pat community and very commercialized. Would gladly return to Tarifa but wish we had skipped Nerja.

Estepona? I haven't been but I mention it because it's been on my wishlist for ages and is supposed to be very different from Torremolinos or Marbella.
Otherwise maybe Cadiz although that's not in the area you mention.
We visited Nerja late October/early November and drove through it one day late February and there were loads of people around still.
We also stayed in Almuñécar which we much preferred. Yes, a lot of high-rise on the seafront but a real mix of nationalities and a nice historical centre and markets. If you have a car definitely visit Salobreña to eat fish down on the beach (open both times we went in November and February

Possible to bus to Granada too

I'd recommend Conil de la Frontera, near Vejer.

Or Zahara de los Attunes...

Not sure what you mean by south of Malaga since it’s on the water. If you’re wanting something along the coast, here’s a few:

East of Malaga: Nerja was our least favorite spot in 2017, but we did like wandering the nearby white village - Frigiliana.

West of Malaga: I’ve stayed in Estepona twice (2024, 2025) and like it a lot. Don’t expect a busy city or any major “must do’s” - just easy going more traditional small-feel city without the high rises of other cities along the coast. But, personally I wouldn’t want to be there more than 4-5 days unless you’re planning Gibraltar or playing golf.

I’m a fan of Cádiz. It’s on the Atlantic coast so expect some wind, but it’s just an amazing old city! I’m staying there next Spring for the third time.

Thank you all very much for your suggestions. I have been to Cadiz and it is wonderful. Also white villages. Good points about late in the year, things closing up. I am still open to more ideas west and east of Malaga.
Gracias!

Could you reply to our queries—how far is too far, have you ruled out Cadiz area, Tarifa? I’m trying to learn via this thread too, but I’ve always had the impression this area is avoided for a reason, as high rise and golf/expat central.

The Costa del Sol is a lot more Spanish than it used to be, and the good thing is that most of the amenities are open year round and it’s cheap! Benalmadena is a nice resort. Benalmadena Pueblo which is inland is a very pretty and very Spanish small town. I’ve stayed there before and it’s very charming but I’d advise a car, although there is a bus as well.

To the east of Malaga you have some lovely towns like Hondarribia, Almunecar and Salobrena. I don’t know what these are like out of season. Almunecar and Salobrena have a sizeable population so a lot will be open but these are popular Spanish holiday towns so I’d expect some things to be shut.

Helen mentioned Hondarrbia, but that town is on the north coast, not anywhere near Málaga. She may have meant Nerja.

LOL
I meant La Herradura. It’s a lovely little place with great restaurants and water sports options. We did a fab snorkelling trip there. I would imagine it’s pretty much closed out of season but I’m not sure.

Tarifa sounds like the winner here, unless you are willing to go further west to the Costa de la Luz....I'd just wonder about the wind in October...

There is so much to do and see inland from Tarifa, in La Janda, and also west along the coast....Roman ruins, the great tuna restaurants, open air art museum, "white towns" galore that are not jammed with bus tourists.....

Estepona. Lovely traditional beach town which doesn't close down out of season. I'll be there next month to escape a bit of miserable November weather.
