How many nights do you have? Do you have an idea of how far you want to go? There are many lovely places before you even hit the French border. In addition to the aforementioned Cadaques and Figueres (for the Dali Museum), there's Girona with its large, beautiful medieval quarter. I can't comment on the best coastal towns, other than Cadaques, but others can.

Are you planning to drop the car in France (with most likely a very high drop charge), or will you be returning it to Spain (requiring extra time for the round trip)?

We did visit the Costa Brava but we did not go into France from here. I can recommend staying overnight in Cadaques, a lovely fishing village, and also stay overnight in Girona, a very interesting medieval small city. Along the way to Cadaques, we visited Tossa del Mar, Callalela de Palafrugel, and S'agaro. Hope this helps.

Was in Costa Brava in September and Tossa de Mar is
a gem with a cliffside castle overlooking its main beach. Girona is another fascinating city with a completely intact historic center where Game of Thrones scenes were filmed. Only 25 minutes from Girona is the much smaller ancient town of Besalu.

You are going to one of my favorite parts of Europe. Girona for sure. I quite enjoyed the Dali Museum in Figures, even though I’m not a fan of his art.

We enjoyed Collioure and the surrounding area very much. The little town of Ceret houses a quite good museum of modern art. Apparently, Picasso and some of his pals spent time there; and some of their works are displayed. Also, there are ceramic reproductions of some works on display, outdoors. In or around the town 🤔 there are a couple of small, romanesque churches, with charmingly carved portals.

We were just there in October for the first time. We did Tossa de Mar as a daytime stop over and enjoyed it. Nice beach. Lots of restaurants. We stayed in Timariu- on a small cove. Other small spots nearby. A few restaurants. Quieter. Dinner in Begur a few times while there- short drive. Nice small town up the hill with some neat restaurants. Pals, a medieval town was quaint. Girona was much larger with lots of history, shops and many restaurants. We enjoyed Figures- with the Dali museum and many shops and restaurants. A good guide with lots of detail is the Moon guidebook. She covers all of the towns in the area.
