Christmas Eve - Toledo

Thinking about a day trip on Christmas Eve to Toledo. Am I going to run into issues with reduced train service? Will anything be open in the city - shops or restaurants? If Toledo isn't a good choice, any suggestions for what to do in Madrid on Christmas Eve?

I think you could have problems. Cannot speak to Toledo but we have spent Christmas eve in both Munich and Sevilla. In both locations everything started shutting down around mid afternoon and by 6 pm very little was open. I would not plan on using any transportation after 3 pm. The only restaurants we saw open were associated with hotels and they were packed. Our tour guide the day before had encourage us to hit the supermarket and have a couple of meals packed. And that is what we did. Our hotel had a nice roof top garden and we had our picnic lunch with a great view.

Frank, this is why I said do the searching -- iirc there are a couple of kosher restaurants near the sinagogo in Toledo that were open but as you say packed so need to reserve ahead.

Why hasn't the tradition of getting Chinese food on Christmas made its way to Europe, I wonder?

You could be right, Mikel, but I also suspect that the history of Spanish treatment of Jews and Chinese could also possibly perhaps maybe have some part in that.

Maybe I'll get to discuss it further someday in a bar in Castrillo Matajudios, if I happen to visit on the feast day of Santiago Matamoros with some Chiñoles companions. We could talk about it over a nice roasted cochinillo.

[I should explain that the tradition I allude to above is an American Jewish tradition, not a general population tradition]
