We will be flying from Granada, Spain, to JFK , New York, this April, with a one hour fifteen minute layover in Madrid. Is this enough time to make the connection? We will be booking with either American Airlines or British Airways, if that makes any difference. Thanks for any help.
If the airline sold you a ticket with that connection then it is enough time. If the flight is delayed from Granada they will put you on another flight from Madrid to JFk as there are three non stops operated by British American Iberia all code shares partner airlines
If booking on the airline website ( directly with the airline) then you should be OK. Need to keep a move on, but if the airline sets it up that way, they believe it can be done.
I have been looking at changing in Madrid, too, soon. Looks like terminals 1-2-3 are connected and terminal 4/4 satellite is separate. The AA flight I am looking out flying out of MAD seems to go out of T4, and the incoming flight I was looking at would come into T1, so I'd need to change terminals completely without walking. It appears that there may be some free connection by bus for transit passengers but it wasn't clear to me how this works. (There's also a bus for passengers and visitors between terminals that is outside of the secure zone.) I, like you, would be going from Schengen to non-Schengen flight, and it wasn't clear how I'd connect without exiting the secure zone and having to start all over in T4, something I would hope to avoid with a tight connection.
But if your flight is all on one ticket...the airline has to get you home on a later flight (eventually) if you miss the connection. The question is, is there a later flight on to JFK that same day that they'd probably put you on if you miss the earlier one? If so, I'd worry a lot less about this. (In my case, I'd be flying AA to Dallas, and I think I'd have to find a whole different connection home.)
Moserten,
I presume you booked your flights on a single ticket, correct?
If this is the case, then as the others have mentioned, the connection time is considered adequate by the airline and if the flight from Granada is delayed, then the airline is responsible for getting you to JFK.
I’ve flown into and out of Madrid Barajas Airport but have not had a connecting flight there.
Here’s some information regarding how to transfer from one terminal to the next for your connecting flight:

Have a wonderful trip!
My experience with Madrid Airport is mostly flying into and out of, not a connection, but I can add that Terminals 2 and 3 are fairly compact and next to each other. Terminal 1 is adjacent, but a looong walk, plus once in terminal 1, the gate can be another long walk. Terminal 4 may not be within walking distance, but there is a bus, making it maybe an easier trek than terminal 1 to 2 or 3; or vice-versa.
