Who is your service provider? T-Mobil works everywhere. Other providers you may need to buy a roaming package.

I like using an eSim. I've used Airolo on several trips, and it's easy to install and reasonably priced. They have packages that just include data, or that include both calls & data.

We just returned from Spain and have AT&T. In our case it was a better deal to upgrade our plan for just one month than it was to purchase their ‘International Plan’ separately (we paid about $40 for the one month upgrade vs $100 for the int’l plan). It allowed us to use our phones as usual while we were traveling. I think this is important because there is so much online ticketing, maps, transit apps, as well as two factor verification these days. It depends on what plan you have currently whether or not this would be the best choice for you. I believe they also have an international day pass where you only pay for the days in which you use your phone (for data or talking/text). For the day pass, you would probably need to keep your phone in airplane mode unless you needed to use the phone to avoid getting charged every day.

Some people also choose to get by on WiFi only, it just depends on your style, and how you want to use your phone.
