We've been thinking about going to either the Drach Caves in Porto Cristo or Cuevas de Arta in Capdepera. Bus to the Drach Caves is a little over an hour from Palma but 2+ to Capdepera. Was considering renting a car for one day to visit one of those caves and have lunch on that side of the island. Anyone been to either cave tour or have thoughts on if it's worth renting a car?
Cuevas de Arta most definitely. The Cuevas del Drach are a touristy gimmick (although to be fair the Arta caves have a gimmicky aspect to them but nowhere near as bad). With the Drach caves you are led (rushed) by a guide who doesn't really allow you time to take in the surroundings. At the bottom is a subterranean lake and seating laid out in an amphitheatre style. You are seated until all the seating is occupied (if you're one of the first groups to be seated be prepared to wait for around an hour for the place to fill up) before being serenaded by a quartet of musicians floating by on boats. This lasts for a few minutes before a chaotic exit via a narrow walkway. I was sorely disappointed and did not see much of the caves themselves, Arta was a much better experience.
Thanks for the info JC, that was my impression of Drach Caves from reading reviews.
