Cathedrals in northern Spain

We are looking at Spain for this September. We hope to drive from Madrid towards Burgos . The cathedrals at Leon and Burgos are goals . We have about 3 days penciled in before returning to Madrid.

Any recommendations or suggestions for the cathedrals? They seem more important given the fire in Paris at Norte Dame.

The actual El Cid (no, not Charlton Heston) and his wife are buried in The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos.

I like both of them. Get the audio guides for them. In Leon, the guides will tell you some great information about the 100's of meters of stained glass this church has.
In Burgos, would also make time to visit the Evolution Museum as it is really good.

When I was in Burgos 4 years ago at the end of Sept. they were having a fantastic medieval fest. You might want to check dates for festivals for any of the cities in Spain, as the city was pretty crowded.

Both those cathedrals are wonderful. In Burgos I also liked the Cartuja de Miraflores, but that was mostly because I found Berruguete's "Annunciation" stunning, not because of the architecture. The Cartuja is not in the center of town.

I preferred the Burgos cathedral over Leon, but they have a lot of differences. I felt the interior of the Leon cathedral was only ok and less ornate than the one in Burgos. As acraven stated, the Cartuja de Miraflores (a few miles outside of Burgos) is nice to visit.

If you are going to León, take the time to visit San Isidoro. It is Romanesque, rather than Gothic, in style but has much to offer: frescoes, sculpture, architecture, and a magnificent Treasury.
