Catalonia. Route advices

Hi. I'm going to Catalonia alone in the beginning of September and would like to hear some advices about traveling through it. I'm arriving to Barcelona, but want to make it as the last destination point in the end. What places can I go directly from there, so that later I could step by step move closer to it again?
I'm thinking of the north direction as there are a lot of possibilities to go from Barcelona to, let's say, Girona and then down by Costa-Brava... Or maybe you could advice some other opportunities? I'd love to catch both: small towns' architecture and atmosphere and some beautiful beach locations.
Some details: I'm arriving to Barcelona at 19:00, which makes it difficult to find some transfer to other towns directly as they all stop going around 21:00. So the following question- Do you know any good and cheap hostels there just to sleep over for the morning train/bus etc?
Another important detail: I don't have driving licence, so some tips about traveling by public transport would be great as well.

Thank you.

Is this a road trip? I'm assuming so.

With a 19:00 airport arrival. I would initially head south, and to the nearby beach town of Sitges.
Then further south to Tarragona & Poblet Monastery.
Away from the coast (and crowds) to ...
La Seu d'Urgell, Solsona, Vic, Ripoli, Olot.
Into Girona province and ...
Besalu & Figueres.
Finally the wonderful beaches of the Costa Brava ... Cadaques, Empuries, Roses, Llafranc, Begur.
Return the car in Girona, and get the train in to Barcelona.

David, Anna doesn't have a license so isn't going to be driving.

Anna, we need to know how many days you have.

I loved Girona, and it has good train service from Barcelona. How are are you arriving in Barcelona--by plane, train, or bus?

Oh dear. Sorry. I missed that vital detail. Blame it on being confined to sick bed with flu.

David, it's okay :)

As for the the amount of days- I think around 5-6, I'd like to leave a week for Barcelona later.

As for the arrival to Barcelona- I'm coming by plane, terminal 1. I read somewhere that there are some some difficulties with transver from this one, right?

How much does it take to get from the airport to the train station approximately? Do you really think I can be in time for the last train?

Thank you very much for all the places recommended.
