Catalonia or Valencia?

We land in Barcelona around noon on October 4th. We have until the morning of the 10th before we fly to Palermo to join the Rick Steve's Sicily tour. We have never been to Spain, but we travel to Europe every year, so we are well acquainted with jet lag. I am optimistic because the timing of when we leave the US and arrive in Spain we should be close to the right timing if we can sleep on the plane (we're flying business class so we can lay down all the way).

Anyway, my question: with this amount of time would you spend it all in Catalonia or would you split it between Barcelona and somewhere south like Valencia? Our priorities are scenery, relaxation, and food. I know that one must appreciate all of Barcelona's architecture so I would say that is a passive interest that we could take in on our way to an incredible tapas location. I had thought of Girona and Cadaques to the north if we go that direction.

We are pretty open to suggestions and I look forward to hearing peoples comments and experiences.
Thanks in advance!

No need to go all the way down to Valencia (which is worth its own whole vacation) when you have Tarragona closer by. Between Barcelona and Tarragona you will have plenty of scenery, relaxation, and food -- especially considering that the RS tour leans toward active anyway.

I loved Girona. Worth a full day or more. It's also a convenient base for side trips to Figueres, Cadaques and Besalu. Cadaques is really beautiful (white houses dripping with bougainvillea in the summer; not sure about blooms in October); the bus ride in from Figueres was lovely. I skipped the Dali Theatre and Museum in Figueres but now regret it. Besalu is a small inland town with a fortified bridge.

There are good walks at Montserrat if the October weather cooperates.

I spent ten nights in Barcelona, with only one partial day away (to Sitges). I'd have a hard time tearing myself away from the big city, but I had a much stronger interest in the modernista architecture than you do.

Thanks for the feedback acraven. Those are great options. I would love to visit Montserrat so that is on the list. I originally thought I would like to base in Cadaques but Girona actually looks more appealing as a base when we aren't in Barcelona.

So many options.....

Girona is better from a transportation standpoint, since Cadaques is at the end of a bus ride (however lovely).

Good advice so far. Cadaques is worth a visit, and a stay if you just want to chill for a couple of days. But Girona makes for a better base to go explore nearby places.

Tarragona has some great Roman ruins, but other than that I don't think it would fit your interests. I did not find the food scene there all that great.

With only 6 nights, you can easily fill that up in Barcelona and nearby. But I'll throw in an endorsement for Valencia. A more laid back city with a completely different character than Barcelona. And really good food. Two nights would suffice. You could spend 4 nights in Barcelona and 2 in Valencia.
