Catalan Parliament Declares Independence From Spain
Catalonia's parliament voted to declare independence from Spain, escalating a standoff with Madrid as the central government prepares to impose direct rule on the region.
Lawmakers in Catalonia's regional parliament, where separatists hold a majority of seats, held the vote in secret. Most opposition lawmakers abandoned the parliament in protest at what they branded a direct attack on Spain's constitution and an affront to Catalans who don't support secession.
The vote in favor of independence came hours before Spain's Senate was poised to grant emergency powers to the central government to impose direct rule on Catalonia.
