Car travel from Grenada to vist hill towns of andulucia-advise please

We will be traveling to Spain in March with another couple. We would like to rent a car in Grenada, drive to Ronda , spend a night and then drive to Arcos de la Frontera for the day and then to Jerez, where our friends will meet relatives, we'll drop the car and will take a train to Seville.
We have never rented a car or drove on our previous travels to Europe -any suggestions for car rentals in these areas?
Anyone who has traveled in this area-does this sound like a good itinerary and is this an easy drive. ( I must admit I am a little nervous about driving)
Any advice or tips you could give me about driving in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Denise

I have driven in this area, not this exact route, but it seems like a fine itinerary to me.

Granada to Ronda is on the A92, and much of the rest is on A routes as well - A routes are basically like our interstates - big, well maintained roads. Better maintained than interstates, actually. Smaller roads are also good. Narrower and go through towns.

I have used Europcar and done well, but I think plenty of agencies will be fine. It depends on who has an office in both Granada and Jerez. If this proves too difficult (I don't know how many agencies are in both) you could drive toSeville and drop the car there - it's much bigger. But your train idea is better if it works.

Do you drive stick shift? If not, be sure to specify - manual transmission is standard there so you will pay more and need to reserve ahead for automatic.

Via Michelin is a good site for European driving directions.

Hop on google street view to look at the roads - you will see that it all looks very easy driving.

It is spelled Granada - I'm not trying to be pedantic, just FYI because if you use any GPS or online maps the spelling matters!

I have driven in the area but not on the proposed route. The roads are well maintained, even the secondary mountain roads and they can be quite scenic as well. Bring a GPS, signage, especially in the towns and cities can be confusing sometimes.
Regarding rental agencies you should avoid Goldcar like the plague! A quick google search should tell you why.

Denise, we drove all over Andalusia last year, and had no problems at all (except for a speeding ticket). Rented from Hertz and Malaga airport. Now, the speeding issue--the roads are very well marked, and when they say slow down, do it! There are cameras everywhere, and they will present you with a ticket once you get home, which in our case was 50 euro, plus a processing fee to Hertz. Never dreamed in a million years we were speeding, but the roads are good, traffic was light, etc etc. and some of the slow down areas, there was no reason to slow down. My GPS was constantly warning of cameras...but I guess I didn't pay enough attention. And I've driven all over Europe, this was the first such incident. Get a decent GPS with Europe maps, along with paper maps, and you won't have any problem.
Your route sounds beautiful, you will love that area of Spain.

I own a car and keep it in Malaga (instant credibility).
First, set aside your nerves as they are unwarranted.
Second, obtain from AAA an International Drivers Permit for all who will drive. Approximately $20 each and required by law.
Third, use the following web site as a resource:
https://www.viamichelin.com/
Fourth, use google earth street view to "pre drive" your expected routes so you can identify some landmarks
Fifth, four people plus luggage so rent the "right size" vehicle.
Sixth, consider gas and parking expense when deciding if you really want to rent a car. Note: all your destinations are available via train or bus and both options are excellent due to cleanliness, comfort and less hassles. I own a car due to being a photographer and travel to places not served by train or bus.
Seventh, to add perspective please consider you are renting a car for a total (using your trip destinations) of about 7ish hours of driving.

@ marbleskies-thanks for the information! We will actually spend the night in Ronda and travel to Arcos the next day. I did notice the public transportation-it just looks cool to drive! Thanks a lot!

Consider carefully what size car you need. You have a goodly number of driving hours, much of it scenic. Will you alternate front/back seating (and necessarily, the driving)? It's not as easy to enjoy the views from the back seats (and there may be a lot less leg room there). You'll want a car large enough for everyone to be comfortable . . . and to hold all your luggage with may be as big a problem. A larger car will be harder to manage if you want to drive into any of the small hill towns along the way - and you should consider that, they are interesting to see but there are lots of steep narrow streets with sharp (blind) corners. In Arcos, it's advisable to park below the old town and take the minibus (or walk) up and back. You'll want to have all your belongings in the trunk out of sight. Ronda is pretty level and as long as you stick to the main streets, you shouldn't have a problem with those sharp corners. The highways are well maintained and in the hills there are frequent pullouts where you can stretch your legs while you admire the view.
