Car rental in Granada

We are currently on our trip in Spain, and prior to our trip, I had posted a question on this forum regarding the feasibility of renting a car in Granada to drive to Ronda and then Seville. From the sounds of the responses, this seemed fairly easy, and in some responses, even highly recommended it, in order to see the countryside. Well, it was good for that, but no one (even on TA) mentioned how grotesquely expensive it is... unless I got robbed!

Here is the way it went: I reserved the car online (via Vueling) two months before our trip, for pick up Granada train station on the 22nd, return to Seville on the 23rd. The cost was $173 USD. Upon pick up, a charge for $40 pre paid gas, and $50 insurance fees were noted. At the bottom of the bill, it said that upon drop off, I would owe $295 Eur - This in ADDITION to the $173 USD I had already paid upfront at the time of reservation. Does this sound right?!?! Nearly $500 for a rental car for 2 days ?!?! That seems outrageous to me! Had I known, we would have just taken the train, or a bus! At that price, we could have just hired a taxi to take us there!

Doesn't sound right to me. What was the extra 295 for? The rest sounds normal - and 50 is very low for insurance. Was the 295 some sort of premium insurance (no deductible type situation?)

If it's any consolation, $500 is still way cheaper than hiring a taxi ;)

From Madrid I've paid about 1000 for a week for an automatic car with good insurance

I have no idea of how you incurred these charges, but we always utilized Autoeurope for car rentals and did not have these issues. Prior to purchasing a car in 2009, we regularly rented vehicles in the range of 300 euros for a week.
