Ok, we would like ideas for day trips in the Canary Islands of Lanzarote and Tenerife in the fall. We are coming in on a cruise and would like to see these beautiful islands.

Having been there last November on a Windstar cruise from Lisbon, I suggest that you take one of the ship excursions. Because they will leave without you, it is too risky to use public transportation, and the distances are too long to rent a car (and make good use of it, that is.) You will likely miss significant sights if you do this in a hurry, on your own. (Opinion!)
Tenerife is huge, and excruciatingly developed for mass tourism. I suggest that you buy (or go to the library for) Lonely Planet and read about each island you're going to. That's what I did. You'll find what you want to do, and what you wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.
