hi, we will be spending two weeks in Andalusia. Which would you choose as a place to spend two nights - Cadiz or Jerez de La Frontera? What parts of the town should we stay in and any hotel or apartment recommendations.
Jerez de la Frontera has the equestrian center and show, sherry bodegas, and an Alcázar that’s worth visiting for 1.5 hours or so. Other than those, there are no must see sights. Cádiz is on a peninsula and easy to walk around. It has a cathedral that is continually being repaired (since at least 1977) because of the materials used to construct it, but no must see sights. If you stayed in Cadiz you could take the ferry over to Rota or Puerto de Santa María if you got bored and walk around it. In March both will be very quiet. You could also drive over to Vejer de la Frontera to walk around. Jerez is only about a 30 minutes drive from Arcos de la Frontera. Cadiz has more of a city feel while Jerez has more of a small town feel. I can’t recommend a hotel since we stayed at the Duque de Nájera hotel in Rota where we used to live.
We enjoyed seeing both cities but I would prefer to stay in Cadiz. It is the oldest city in Europe and that fascinates me. We enjoyed walking all over the city and would like to return there.
I think Cadiz has more to see and do than Jerez. I would stay in the old city center west of the train station. It's pretty compact, so any part that has a hotel you like should be good.
