Cadiz Day Trip Itinerary Suggestions

Staying in Seville and would like to take a day trip to Cadiz.

  1. What would you recommend for a 1 day itinerary, returning to Seville same day?
  2. Should we try to do Jerez on same day or would Jerez be better as a separate day trip?
  3. Should I book the trains ahead of time for round trip Seville to Cadiz?

Thanks

Cadiz is a good day trip. It is the oldest city in Europe, lots of antiquities there. Visit Jerez another day.

i) Cadiz is a great destination for a day (or more), but I don't think it has any "wow" sights in the way Sevilla, for example, has. You might want to consider the cathedral, the Gadir archaeology site and (if open), the Roman Theatre. But, overall, I think the attraction of Cadiz is walking around the peninsula, enjoying the ambience and eating the wonderful food. Thus, strolling the narrow streets, coastal walkways and impressive plazas. Along the way you have specific places to visit such as the central market, Santa Catalina and Sebastian castles and Puerta de Tierra. If you want a longer day, you could include a brief ferry trip to Puerto de Santa Maria.

ii) Jerez is also great, but doing both on the same day would, I think, be too rushed.

iii) Usually you don't need to book in advance, but it depends on whether a festival is going on somewhere, etc.

I can’t speak to using public transportation so don’t know if you could do both Cádiz and Jerez de la Frontera in the same day. To me, Cádiz has no wow sites. It does have a cathedral that is under continual renovation because of the materials used in its construction. Because of its location it is fairly compact, level, and easy to walk around. There are some nice parks and there is a beach. I feel a half day there is sufficient but others will say otherwise.

Jerez is a maze of twisty streets and nice to explore. Its main draws are the equestrian center and sherry bodegas. Its Alcazaba is worth visiting.

In addition to the ferry to Puerto de Santa María, there’s also a ferry to Rota. Both Rota and Puerto have small castles with limited hours. If the bay is rough the ferries stop running.
