Looking for a small group tour or a recommended guide for day trips from Caceres, Spain, June 2026. I would appreciate any suggestions!
Cáceres is a nice town. Since I had a vehicle on that trip I’m not sure about public buses. Within an hour of Cáceres are Mérida and its Roman ruins and Trujillo (known for Conquistador Francisco Pizarro). It also has a nice castle up the hill from the main plaza that is very much worth visiting. Its entrance fee was nominal.
Past Trujillo is Guadalupe and its Royal monastery of Guadalupe; a UNESCO world heritage site. If going there check its hours. It has morning and afternoon hours. Tours are every hour and last about an hour. One cannot wander of their own and no photographs are allowed in the inside parts of the monastery. Trujillo and Guadalupe could be seen on the same day.
Plasencia is also an hour away and very pleasant to walk around. Its cathedral was free to visit although there are independent guide who will give a tour for a donation. It was a nice cathedral. One can also walk along a portion of the old city walls. That was free to do too. On one route between Plasencia and Cáceres is Monfrague National Park. It was nice to drive through.
A few miles outside of Cáceres is Natural Monument Los Barruecos. It’s an interesting landscape and scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed there.
Lesser cities are Alcántara and Badajoz. Each are worthy of spending some time visiting.
Two hours away, in Portugal, is Monsanto. It’s a town built among boulders. Scenes from House of the Dragon were filmed there. We visited it from Plasencia and also stopped in Coria and Galisteo on the return. Galisteo was interesting because the city wall, one can walk on, was built using river stone rather than large blocks of stone.
Thank you! Awesome detailed response!
How many days will you be there? Are you arriving by train and then without transport?
I also had a car, but I'm sure there is a local tourist office where you can inquire directly about tours.
You can get to Merida easily. What kind of things are you interested in doing?
Thank you for your response! 2 full days and two half days on either end, arriving by train and trying to stick to mass transit. You are correct there's a tourism office, and they have info on their website but I was hoping to get some first-hand knowledge from people who've visited. I love all the things--culture, nature, history, food--broad and vague, and not sure if that's helpful or not!. Would love any suggestions! Thanks!
Yes I meant the office for hiring certified drivers and tours. The list you have already is more than you could do with two days. I’d probably lean toward doing something by train one day, hiring a driver for the other day. Caceres and environs is quite beautiful, enjoy!
Great idea, thank you!!
