I will be driving from Salamanca, Spain to Merida, Spain, and would like to stop on the way for a quick visit. I have looked up both Caceres and Placensia, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, but can't decide which one. Anyone with first hand knowledge of both?
Caceres has a small, medieval walking center, good for a stretch of the legs. Good place to buy the smoked paprika (that the region is famous for) and pastries from cloistered nuns (using a wheel through a wall).
Merida has a decent small museum and a very interesting set of Roman ruins. Also look for the remains of the Roman aqueduct.
While driving between the two, watch for the prized black bulls, the cork trees, and for the stork nests in this area.
Thanks Diane.
I still don't know whether to stop in Placensia or Caceres on the way to my overnight in Merida.
Maybe someone else knows?
