Buying AVE Trains from Renfe

Thought I will share my experience with Renfe website. Hope it helps others (mostly in America, because of credit card decline)
The best prices for AVE fast trains are through the Renfe site. There is a $15/$20 markup per ticket in other places. Specially, if you are buying for family, it adds up.

The credit card didn't go through even after calling the credit card company multiple times. They even unblocked the transaction.

What finally worked was a paypal account. It first declined the paypal transaction. When I called the paypal they said they declined it because they didn't know what site it was. So I had to answer couple security questions and then tired to buy the tickets again. It finally went through.
So buy with paypal but let them know that you are making a transaction through Renfe.

Hope it helps!

I did :)
It's not the same price as Renfe! Again we had a difference of $60 for 4 tickets. Maybe, because we had the option for Mesa tickets(promo) on Renfe. Mesa is the four seats and has a table in between.

Thanks for the report on working with PayPal. PayPal is the best form of payment for Renfe, if you don't have a true chip-and-PIN credit card, or have not signed up with Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode.

I just bought my Madrid-Barcelona ticket for May, and it was actually cheaper on Loco2.com. I checked both sights first to confirm that Renfe was more expensive. There was no extra fee that I saw for using a credit card either, which I've seen on some other booking sites.

Renfe has a senior discount for people 60 and over. Does anyone know if it applies to tourists or just Spanish citizens.

They do. You have to buy a card - 6 euro a couple of years ago, probably 7 or 8 today - show a passport. The card is good for a year.
