HI I will be visiting Spain for the first time in October and will be needing a phone to contact airbnb places where I'll be staying. Will I be able to buy a phone at the airport? Any idea what it would cost and would they speak English to let me know how to use it? Just want something simple and basic.

You'd probably do better to buy an UNLOCKED phone before you go, and get a SIM card when you arrive. You can definitely get the SIM card at the airport and countless other places in Barcelona. The phone might be a bit harder, and you'd probably save by getting it at home. Just make sure it's unlocked.
For the card, Orange, Vodafone and Movistar and all have good coverage in Spain
If your phone at home is unlocked you can just go with a SIM card.
