Buy luggage in Barcelona

We came from Bilbao earlier today and my wife's luggage was ripped and we have to get a replacement before going home. We are thinking to get it at El Corte Inglés. Is that a good place to start? Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

I would ask a local about this. El Corte Ingles seems a good option, but I would ask my concierge and tell them what type of budget you have. If you are satisfied with a cheaper brand that will get you home and a bit more, then that will be a different shop than a luggage boutique selling Tumi.

El Corte Ingles is a good start. Just compare like you would do in the states. 2 years ago we were in the same boat and we asked at the front desk where to buy a new one. This was at a local store in Toledo.

I would just keep my eye open as I travel about today. We have seen many discount luggage shops. El Corte is a major department store - like Macy's, Dillards, etc. My guess is that you might get better prices somewhere else.

Don't forget to get the detax papers if it is over a threshold price.

It all depends on what you're after.... is this something you intend to heavily use for the next 20 years? or is simply something "to get by" for a while?

For the later, I suggest one of the many discount shops (referred locally as "Chinese shops", or "tenda de xinos" in Catalan, the local language) that you'll find all over the city... for under 30€ you can find very decent suitcases.

If you're after a more serious piece of luggage -or if branding is important to you-, then El Corte Inglés is indeed a good place, but there are other specialised shops in the city that might better cater you. If you mention where you're based I can try to think of one nearby.

Btw, sorry for hijacking the thread, but Roger, in case you're interested in classical music you then might be interested in this:

If you're free this evening, MAY 25th 8:30pm, there's an open-air live-stream concert at the Old Port (Port Vell), near the posh OneOceanClub (in Passeig de Borbó), by the Vienna Philarmonic Orchestra. The famous orchestra is performing tonight in their Schönbrunn annual concert in Austria and, in one of their cooperation exchanges with the city of Barcelona, the concert is simultaneously broadcast here. There'll be bits of Dvorak, Stravinski, Rakhmàninov... Attendance is free of charge.

PS.... so, over and out for now, going there myself :)

Thank you for the great suggestions. Will make sure we get the IVA rebate if we exceed the threshold. So we have nine days to figure this out. We are probably looking for a light weight replacement not too expensive or too cheap.
Enric we went to Bodegas 1900 and we missed the concert.

After our visit to Palau de la Musica we stopped at Corte Ingles and since time is money decided to buy it there so we don't have to waste more time. They gave us the IVA papers. Thank you for all your help.
