We are traveling from Madrid to Bilbao. I see the train and busses take about the same time. The bus offers more options so I wonder what is the forum’s experience with bus travel and whether you recommend it?

The bus is a great way to get around Spain. As you have found out the busline have more options and can often be quicker than the train if you have to make connections. Another plus for the bus is that it arrives and leaves directly from the T4 terminal.
