I'm putting together our trip to Basque Country Spain to France. We're flying into Bilbao then to San Sebastian and on to St. Jean de Luz. We're staying 4 days each place, flying back to Phoenix from Biarritz. I looked up transportation from each place to next and I see the bus service takes shorter time than trains. My question is: do buses allow for us to bring one suitcase and a carry-on, both on rollers or is it better to do that by train? The suitcase is not heavy, maybe 40 lbs. Thank you for this help. We actually prefer to go by bus if we can take our suitcase.
Bus is frequently overlooked by US visitors in Spain, but it´s an excellent means of transport: safest, cleanest, modern, comfortable and frequent. The train from Bilbao to Donostia-San Sebastian (or viceversa) is a commuter train with many stops, so it takes much longer than the bus and it´s a more logical option (although the train is quite scenic). Yes, you can bring your suitcase and your carry-on, no problem at all. You´ll find excellent public transportation in the Basque Country.
