Bus from Figueres Valifant Train Station to Hotels Pirineos and Duran

  • EDIT: I'm editing the title to include the more popular Figueres Hotel Duran, which turns out to be just a block or so down the street from the Pirineos.

We'll be in Figueres this weekend to visit the Dali Museums. We'll be arriving at the Figueres Valifant train station, and would like to take the city bus to our hotel, the Pirineos. I have already spent way too much time on Google Maps, and City Mapper does not cover Figueres.

Can we catch a city bus from Valifant? I have seen it suggested that transportation is better from the other, local, train station, and we may need to take a shuttle between the two train stations. Is there more than one bus line? Can we buy tickets from the driver, or is there a way to buy them at a bus stop?

Details, I need details! It does look like the distance is walkable, and we may well do that, but we'll be getting into Figueres rather late in the day, and may not want to schlep our bags.

A taxi would be our last choice. Rome2Rio, a notoriously unreliable source, says a taxi would cost about 25 euro. That seems unlikely. Any helpful hints for us?

Oh, and time is not a factor. We're arriving the evening before the day of our timed entry tickets.

Thank you!

Google Maps says your hotel is just a bit less than a mile from Figueres Vilafant and there's a stop for Bus L1 a 9-minute walk from the station. That bus goes near your hotel, so it will cut your walking time roughly in half, though it won't save a lot of time overall.

I got around Figueres on foot, so I have no experience with the city buses. Here's the web page for the city buses: https://www.fisersa.cat/ca/03_BusLinies.html. Click on the text beginning "Nou Mapa i Horaris" to the left of the little map. That will give you schedules (in Catalan) and--beneath the schedules--a map of all the bus lines. The direct link is https://www.fisersa.cat/uploads/images/HorarisBus%20obres-2025.pdf. Figueres Vilafant isn't shown on the map but is located right off the left edge. Google Maps says the nearest bus stop is Jutjats. The stop nearest your hotel is Via Emporitana. The bus goes on through town and stops at/near the Figueres station ("Estacio").

Unfortunately, Bus L1 operates only twice an hour (with gaps of up to 39 minutes between buses), and all I'm seeing is a Monday-Saturday schedule. That surprises me; maybe I'm missing something.

I agree that 25 euros seems high for such a short taxi trip in a comparatively low-cost city, but I have zero experience with Spanish taxis, much less taxis in Figueres.

Acraven! I was hoping you would chime in. I used some of your tips setting this trip up.

Thanks for the links; they complete the information I had already gleaned, filling in some blanks. I suspect the bus may be more trouble than it is worth, but, we'll see. If we're not too tired, we may just walk.

Or if we are tired, try the taxi. We took a taxi in Sevilla for about the same distance, and it clocked in at about 12 euros, after a 5 E supplement (?) was added. The supplement may have been for luggage.

We usually prefer taking public transportation, but in Sevilla our trip to the train station on the tram would have required a longish walk, a tram ride, a change to another tram, then another short walk, rather like the bus trip in Figueres. (sigh)

I'll check out your links and make some notes tonight; we probably won't decide what to do until we get to Figueres. Weather, fatigue, mood... all could be a factor.

Thank you so much for your help. You are always so reliable!

Since there aren't tons of trains stopping at Figueres Vilafant, I don't think you'll find many taxis there. I'd suggest hopping off the train and hot-footing it to the front of the (small) station, with no stop at the toilet. There might be only one or two taxis waiting, and they probably don't hang around long after a train departs. You might also do a bit of Googling for taxi telephone numbers so you can call one if you decide you don't want to walk. Phone numbers may be posted somewhere outside the station, but I didn't need a taxi, so I didn't look.

Thanks for the suggestion. If we think we’ll be too tired to walk, we’ll do that.

I have downloaded the bus timetable, and it looks like we’ll only be on the bus for about 3 minutes, covering 3 stops!

Here’s hoping for good weather, and a restful trip from Madrid.

Thanks again for your thoughtful advice.

I wanted to check back in, just to let people know how it turned out. I'm also modifying the title of the thread to include the more popular Hotel Duran, which is just down the street from the Pirineos.

As it turned out, our travel day was a bit more stressful than we had expected, because of travel delays between Barcelona and Figueres (among other things.) I had downloaded what I hoped was a clearer description of the walk from Figueres Valifant to our hotel, but it was still rather intimidating - just a bit - with steps like "at the first roundabout..." "at the second roundabout..."

Had we been fresher or not had our bags (2 backpacks, 2 laptop case size carry-ons) we would gladly have walked it, the weather being gorgeous and the scenery new to us.

I did consider acraven's suggestion to hop off at the first Figueres train station, which had the added advantage of a map in Rick's "Spain" book showing how to get to the Center from there, but our train was an AVE and didn't stop there.

However, when we emerged from the Vilifant station, there was a long line of taxis waiting! Perhaps because the AVE was delayed and arrived just as another train was due?

We hopped into the first taxi in line; the driver had us take our bags into the back seat with us, which seemed odd, but was doable, although poor Stan was buried in 3 of our 4 pieces. The journey wasn't long, and cost about 16 euros, including a 5-something supplement.

I did see a couple of city buses on the trip, but since we were unfamiliar with the stops and routes, I'm okay with having missed that experience. This time.

Thanks again to acraven for the great advice.

Oh, we love this hotel; I'll post a quick review when I have a chance.
