according to the 2026 edition of Rick Steves Spain, page 220 (Bilbao Connections), there are 6 buses a day from Bilbao to Pamplona, and the trip is 2 hours. I have searched Rome2Rio and the ALSA website and the only options are 3 hours 45 minutes at the minimum (stop in San Sebastian). Does anyone know what bus the RS guidebook is referring to? try CuadraBus. Looks like there are 8 buses and the time is 2h.

You're not looking at the right bus company. Cuadra Bus takes you direct to Iruña/Pamplona in two hours, several times a day.

Although you might expect Rome2Rio to provide information about all bus companies serving a route, its website can be laughably incorrect as to travel times, frequencies and fares. Do not assume it is providing complete, accurate information.
