I am planning a trip to Spain in May and with the Canadian Dollar being so low against the Euro, I want to find economical places to stay that are centrally located in Madrid and Barcelona. Does anyone have suggestions? I will be traveling with a friend so we would like twin beds. Ideally, we would like to keep the cost below $65 Euros per night.
Try looking for the Spanish term "hostal," which is a modest hotel, not a dorm hostel. For instance Rick's listing for www.operaramblas.com (p. 129 of Spain book) is around your price range in Barcelona; Madrid has more.
In Barcelona
Hits your budget ... http://www.hostalalogar.com/
If you can stretch a little ... http://www.medicishotel.com/en/
Or in a better location ... http://www.hotelcenturypark.com/
In Madrid these two look very good ...

Or try these if the two above extend your budget ...

Noise may be a consideration with the second two. 'Hostal' in Spain is like a small private hotel within an apartment building - nothing like a youth hostel, more like a b&b.
Lindy, you might look into the B & B which I have booked for a week in Barcelona in April. It is "The Patio B & B" in Eixample, a few minutes walking from the Sant railroad station, walking toward downtown. It is also right by the Estanca metro station. I am paying €70 per night, including a nice breakfast. I don't know if the rate would be a little higher in May, and probably so for 2 people instead of 1. It is very highly rated on TA, so may already be booked for May. It is small, only 2 rooms, one of which has two twin beds. The 2 rooms share a bathroom, and most reviews do not indicate this was a problem, I am keeping my fingers crossed about that. Good luck!
Thank you to everyone who replied to my query! There are a few really good suggestions that I will follow up!
For Madrid, I recommend Hostal Acapulco: http://www.hostalacapulco.com/ Great location on a quiet street but convenient walking to many sights, as well as being close to several Metro Stations.
In September 2015, I paid €53 for a single, so a twin bed room should be within your budget (e-mail them directly to get prices and availability).
