We are docking in the port of Getxo this September and wondering how to get to the Old Quarter on our own. Able bodied adults who have walked quite a bit on past vacations in Europe. We'd rather not take a shore excursion if at all possible. Also, is it reasonable to add Castro Urdiales to this day and if so can anyone provide directions to get there either from the port or Old Quarter?

Getxo is served by the Metro Bilbao subway system, with the closest stop to the cruise port probably being at Neguri. Bilbao has plenty to see in one day without adding another destination.

Google and Rome2Rio both suggest you can catch an ALSA.es brand bus at Santurce/Santurtzi stop (across the river) to get to Castro Urdiales, however, I haven't had any luck to confirm the schedule on their website.
