MikelBasqueGuide is often a contributor on this forum. He helped me a lot when I planned my trip to the Basque area. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about the Basque area and its history. He was kind to share a lot of his tips. You could send him a private message. You could also look in the Bilbao/San Sebastian chapters in the RS guide to see who RS recommends.

I will be in Bilbao in October also on a cruise.
I have chosen to take one of my ship excursions.
You might go to Bilbao Visitor Information on the web and see if you can find a person or company that offers day excursions.
As the poster above mentioned, MikelBasqueGuide has been very helpful to me as well. He might see your post and jump in.
