Bilbao to Madrid with suitcases

Hi, originally we plan to take the plane from Bilbao to Madrid (given the infrequent trains) but I have now been converted by the fans of buses here to consider taking the bus instead. My only remaining question is, we have 2-3 medium size suitcases between the two of us, will that be ok with buses? Is it fairly easy to get a cab from the bus station in Madrid?

Alsa has several buses a day, from Bilbao to Madrid. If you arrive at the Avenida de Las Americas station you have buses, metro and taxi right there. I have never had a problem taking a suitcase on the bus when I go to the airport.

It´s long distance modern and comfortable coaches very much used to people travelling with suitcases, so you will have no issue at all, your luggage will safely travel in the bottom pcompartment of the coach. I´m one of those fairly insistent on this forum on considering buses as a very good transport option in Spain, so thank you for trying this means of transport!

It´s a busy route but there are many daily departures, I think it´s advisable to buy tickets for a specific departure, unless you prefer to get there and see what buses are available and buy your tickets on arrival. www.alsa.com.

Each person should have only one carry on size suitcase and one smaller personal item either a backpack or a tote bag. Period. That’s all you need.

When traveling, especially by public transportation, one should try to reduce the amount of luggage one needs to haul around. It will make your life easier. If you’re careful packing, a carryon and backpack as suggested should be sufficient to get you through 3-4 weeks although you would need to do laundry at some point. Also, they won’t be as heavy and less luggage should be easier to keep track of. Nobody you meet will know if you wore the same shirt/blouse etc., two days in a row.

Luggage is never a problem. The driver will open the compartments below and allow you to put your items inside. We've used Alsa and FlixBus, so check both sites for your best options. And - cabs are easy to get at the station in Madrid.
