We are traveling with two teenagers from Bilbao, leaving on a Tuesday in June. We fly out of Madrid on that Friday morning. Not much time but that's how it works out. Any tips on getting four of us to Madrid and if we should go straight to Madrid or stop somewhere along the way? Thank you!

Well, bus is the logical option, and from Madrid bus station you can get on the metro to the airport.

Direct trains from Bilbao-Abando to Madrid Chamartín station take 5 hours and generally depart around 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. However, summer schedules are not yet published. They make only a few stops, but if you wanted to stop at Burgos, Valladolid, or Segovia, those are examples that don't require any detour from the direct route of the train.
