Bilbao

My husband and I will be visiting Bilbao at the end of February. We are interested in visiting a few wineries and learning more about the area. Any recommendations for sites to see and hotels would be really appreciated.
Thank you

We have friends who own the Kuki Cookie Bakery in the city center, and they are delicious! Our son is visiting them this week! Stop by for a treat!

Will you have a car? There are no wineries in Bilbao, you have to drive either to the txakoli areas, or to Rioja wine region. Bilbao (my hometown) offers a wide variety of interesting visits: the obvious Guggenheim Museum, but also the less visited Fine Arts Museum, very close by (and free!); the Casco Viejo (old town) and its picturesque streets, bars and shops; Azkuna Zentroa, or how an old wine warehouse was transformed into a unique civic center, worth a visit if just for its peculiar columns; the funicular to Artxanda hill for the very best views of the city; Bilbao La Vieja, former mining area on the other side of the river, facing the old town (maybe a bit edgy); the upper part of the city, with Diputación street, Heros, Henao, Juan de Ajuriaguerra...for excellent bar atmosphere...and its unique arquitecture.

If you want to venture out of the city, it´s very easy on our clean, safe and efficient metro (subway) system. The Puente Bizkaia, UNESCO World Heritage, is really worth seeing, as it´s something unique in the world. From there, a beautiful walk towards the old fishing port of Algorta, very much untouched by mass tourism, with a nearby metro stop (Algorta) to return to Bilbao.
