Best way to travel Barcelona to Valencia

There will be 5 of us, 4 adults and a toddler travelling Barcelona to Valencia. I’ve looked at renting a car but my husband thinks it’s going to be a treacherous coastal drive. Alternately it looks like we’ll spend about $1000 for either a train, bus or flight. Is that right? What’s our best option?

When are you travelling and where are have you been looking for train tickets to find that price? On a random date in July I see train tickets for around €20-30 per person.

We're travelling on October 7 and would like a direct route, airbnb door to airbnb door if possible.

There's nothing treacherous about the drive, highway all the way, but driving within Barcelona and Valencia is unpleasant.
The most logical option would be:

  • taxis (likely 2) to Barcelona Sants station
  • train to Valencia (less than 3 hours)
  • taxis to your accommodation.

There won't be car seats for the toddler, though.

If you're driving, a door to door route is certainly possible. But I still recommend the train. It will be faster, cheaper and more comfortable. I'm sure both the toddler and and the adults appreciate being able to do things while travelling and not just sit down strapped to a car seat.

I'm not sure where your $1,000 estimate for a train comes from, but there are tickets tomorrow under €50 each and it looks like they go as low as €22 with advanced purchase. Add taxis on both ends and that's around $300 max.
