What is your advice for best itinerary plan for a day-trip from Barcelona to Montserrat Monastery? Do you recommend traveling on-your-own or a certain tour group? Is advance purchase necessary? (FYI: my wife is afraid of heights, so we plan using the train vs cable car.)

We did not use Spanish Trails for a day trip to Montserrat, but the four other small-group tours we took with this company were outstanding.
