What is the best time of year to visit Spain? What month is the weather not so hot? What small villages near a train station are nice? Thank you.
Spain is a large country with a lot of microclimates so it all depends on where you want to visit. Your question is a bit like asking “what is the best time of year to visit the U.S.?”
I recommend visiting your local library or bookstore and pick up a travel book on Spain.
We generally go in either May, September, or October, but I’d go any time if given the opportunity. My least favorite months for visiting are June-August and that’s because of the heat.
There are hundreds of small towns and villages near train stations that are worth visiting, so you really need a more focused question, e.g., part of the country, size of the villages or town, transportation hub, things it has to offer, etc. What I find nice may not be what you find nice.
This November will be my first time to Spain. I chose November after talking to our niece who studied abroad there. She said October and November are great, with October being warmer. Since I like crisper weather, I chose November. Heat can make me cranky. Ha!
Mid-summer is usually great, weather-wise, across the northern coast from Galicia to the Basque Country, as well as in the mountains. It is very likely to be miserable in Andalucia and can be almost as bad in Madrid, Zaragoza and even Barcelona (where humidity mixed with less extreme temperatures can make for non-ideal conditions.
Spain is a large country. It's not possible to cover its full extent in the course of a 2-to-4 week vacation. I suggest picking a mix of destinations in a similar climate zone and choosing a good time of year in that area.
Been to Spain a number of times, really depends where you want to go. April/May worked really well for Andalusia, not too warm, but nice enough you could sit on the beach, crowds maybe less, but at the rate Spanish tourism is growing, no way to predict crowds.
February/March was fine for cities like Madrid and Barcelona.
September, maybe even into October works well for a wide ranging trip, with the North being very pleasant in September.
We visited the first 3 weeks in October 2022. Barcelona was still very hot, beach weather. I had to buy a skirt and sleeveless shirt it was so hot. I wore them for the 3 days we were there. The rest of Spain, Madrid, Seville, Granda, Cordoba, and Toledo were perfect weather wise. Not hot at all, nice and cool with a sweater in the evenings.
The "classic" idea of Spain (sun, beach, sangria, siesta...) is quite limited and it does not match with most of the country. It´d be good to know where you are heading, as for example the north (where I live) is quite rainy and much colder than the south. There are mountains almost anywhere in Spain, and that fact makes Spain a very diverse country, with lots of different climates. So please kindly confirm the places to visit so a more accurate answer can be given.
I went in November and thought it was a perfect time to go. The weather was mild to cool and the crowds light.
If you’re free and unencumbered with school or a job, I’d travel in the absolute offseasons to avoid the crowds that increasingly bother local residents. I’d choose November or February-early May; being careful to avoid Holy Week.
