We are driving a rental car from Northern Spain down to Madrid. What is the best place to drop off rental car in Madrid? We don't want to drive in Madrid. Are there rental car agencies in centro Madrid or would we need to take car to airport or train station and then figure out way to hotel near Plaza de Sol? Thanks

The last time I was in Spain, I had a rental from National and returned it at the Plaza de Espana - easy to find with a GPS. It's a quick metro ride - about a minute - from there to Plaza Puerta del Sol. I believe a lot of rental companies have offices in this area.

It probably depends on where you are staying and where you will be coming from. I have always used drop-offs at/near Plaza de España. It is fairly easy to plan a route that gets you there on main roads with only a very short time in central Madrid (main roads). All of the major companies have a drop-off in that area (some may list the address as being on the Gran Via or on Calle Princessa, those are at Plaza de España. It's also probably the closest to Puerta del Sol..

If you decide to drop it off at the airport, the rental car drop-off is at terminal 1. Not many signs until you get closer in. From the airport the metro is 35-40 from the airport to Puerta del Sol.
