Best neighborhoods in Valencia, Spain?

My husband and I are planning a month in Valencia in January. We'd plan to rent a place in Valencia as a home base for exploring. Any ideas on safe, quiet neighborhoods close to good transportation and markets? We like to explore by foot and won't have a car.

I'm making my first visit to Valencia next year so I can't help with the lodging issue, but I'd like to recommend two day-trips that might not be obvious:

  • Cuenca's Fernando Zobel rail station is just under an hour from Valencia-Joaquin Sorolla via AVE. (Buy that train ticket ASAP to get a good fare. The walk-up fare can be as high as 60 euros for the round-trip.) This is best on a weekday; I think the city bus doesn't run into town as often on the weekend. The Cuenca AVE station is well out of town.

  • Teruel has only Media Distancia service, taking about 2-1/2 hours from Valencia, and departures are infrequent. But Teruel is a very interesting city with multiple mudejar towers and few foreign tourists.
