Our family will be in Seville this November. This is our second time to Seville, so we'd like to carve out one day to explore a new city. What would your recommendation be for a family of 4 that includes 2 boys ages 10 and 15? Pros or cons to your suggestions? We will not be renting a car, so it must be accessible by train or bus. I would prefer a fairly direct route. Right now, Cadiz is topping the list. Thanks in advance!
Have you considered visiting Córdoba?
It’s one of my favorite cities in Spain.
I think you and your boys would enjoy the Royal Equestrian show.
Enjoy your trip!
Thank you, great suggestion!
Cordoba is a good idea.
But Cadiz isn't a bad choice either (the railway journey is longer, though). There are no must-see blockbuster sights in Cadiz - which might go down well as you don't need to feel compelled to go into this museum or that church. But it's an exciting place out on the peninsula with the views. There are interesting & varied bits and bobs like the Roman theatre, crumbling Cathedral, lots of narrow streets to explore, fish market and the fort stuck out in the ocean you can walk to. There are also beaches (perhaps not in November, though).
Yes, Cordoba. The "church in the middle of the mosque "architecture is stunning!
If you haven't been to Cordoba, that would be my #1 choice. The Mezquita is stunning and the Juderia is one of the best-preserved medieval quarters in Spain. There are several horse shows a week. Check the schedule for the Royal Stables. On weekdays the shows are at 7 pm (or used to be), but maybe there's a weekend show during the day. The 7 pm show is certainly doable since it lasts about 1 hour. Get tickets in advance, there is limited seating.
For a second choice, go to Jerez for the show at the Royal Equestrian School. Also, several shows a week, a little over an hour beginning at 11 am. Get there well before to see the grounds and, I was told, you can get up close to the horses. Then taxi to the train station and spend the rest of the day in Cadiz. (the train from Sevilla stops in Jerez on the way to Cadiz)
As Chani has mentioned, if you're a horse person, the royal stables in Cordoba may be a more convenient visit than the Andalusian stables at Jerez, since you can combine the stables visit with seeing the Mezquita (church in the middle of the mosque) and other Cordoba sites. We did this on our recent trip to Andalusia.
What about a shorter day trip? Italica is a Roman ruins with amphitheater that is just outside the city. Grab the local bus.
