Where you go depends on what you want to do. About an hour from Besalú are Camprodon and Molló. No idea what’s there, but they are well into the Pyrenees and only 10km from the French Border. En route you could stop at Passarel·la-mirador de Castellfollit de la Roca. For the more adventurous, head toward Rocabruna on the GIV-5223. It would be a narrower mountain road, so very slow traveling. I’m sure a couple of our regular posters from that area will have better ideas.

Will you have a car?
What time of year will it be?

Yes, we have a rental car and it is now! The weather here is still good. In fact, it has been beautiful. We came from a stay in Rupit and now here for 4 nights.

All suggestions appreciated.

Thanks for the extra info!

In that case, I'd recommend you drive up to the medieval stone village of Queralbs, about an hour away. Park your car there then take the rack railway (there are several departure times every day) up to the Vall de Núria. The Vall de Núria is a sacred valley in the high Pyrenees, there is a holy sanctuary and old 1930s hotel at the top, plus a small lake and plenty of hiking trails for all aptitudes. Very picturesque and popular with local Catalans, might be some snow there this time of year.. You can have lunch at the hotel or back at Queralbs.

You may want to double-check the hours for the rack railway in November, I know this time of year is the low season for the Pyrenees

Thanks all. The Rack Railway only runs on weekends in November, so we had to eliminate that. We ended up driving to Puigcerda and into France through the Pyrenees in a loop back to Besalu. Outstanding drive on a gorgeous fall day.

Today we drove to Port Ligat to see the Dali House (reservations required), walked around the lovely Cadaques with a good lunch at Compartir and a drive to Cap de Creus for a bit of walking. Continued with great weather.

As an aside, we used Besalu as a base for 4 nights. I was afraid that it might be too small as a base, but loved coming back to this lovely, snug town after a day exploring in the area.

Thanks for the update, glad you were able to have a nice time exploring the Pyrenees mountains nonetheless, a criminally underrated corner of Spain (and France) if I may say!
